Tattooing in Hawaii

Like many other Polynesian-descended cultures, the native Hawaiians practiced tattooing. The most heavily tattooed members of the tribe would be the royal family, followed by other court officials and persons who were in the royal family by marriage.
The designs were monochromatic, tattooed in black against brown skin. The patterns and layout were strongly geometric and there were many shapes and symbols which represented the natural island world: stones, waves, fish, sharks, turtles, rain, sun, birds.
Tattoos were traditionally created by using a tool much like a sharpened rake to prick the designs. The tattoo tool would be hit by another stick to make the punctures. Assistants helped by stretching the skin for the tattoo artist and by wiping away the blood.

Malloy has said he talks no more or less with his famous client about his art as he does any other customer, preferring to discuss the technical details of the design, allowing the client to keep their own motivations for the design private. Aside from the time that Beckham paid for Malloy’s airfare to Madrid, Spain to do the winged cross on his neck, Malloy has said he charges the same to David as he would any other customer.

The new image was designed by David`s personal tattooist Lou Malloy and is his 11th piece of body art.
David Beckham has got a new tattoo - a naked picture of his wife Victoria. The soccer star's seven-inch artwork on his left arm features the Spice Girl lying on her back surrounded by stars and bearing her breasts with her knees raised up seductively.

The £2,500 etching was based on David's favourite photograph of Victoria from a Bridget Bardot-inspired shoot she did for Pop magazine four years ago. A source said: "David is thrilled with the results. He thinks of Victoria of his angel which is why he decided on the stars. Victoria is very flattered with this beautiful tribute.”

David, 32, showed off his latest tattoo - which is designed around a previous inking of Victoria's name in Hindi - when he stripped off to kick a ball around on a Brazilian beach to launch his latest soccer academy earlier this week.

The new image was designed by David's personal tattooist Lou Malloy and is his 11th piece of body art. He already has the names of his three sons with 33-year-old Victoria - Brooklyn, eight, Romeo, five and Cruz, two - etched on his body, while his right arm is covered in tattoos from wrist to shoulder.
